ROCKAWAY BEACH, OR - At around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, emergency personnel responded to a report of a father (age 50) and his son (age 17) that were swept out to sea near N Pacific Street and NW 3rd Ave in Rockaway. The 17 year old, who was boogie boarding in the surf, became caught in a current and was being swept out to sea. His father jumped into the surf to try and help but was also caught in the current. When responders arrived both father and son where no longer visible from shore.
US Coast Guard Helicopters from Air Station Astoria and Motor Lifeboats from Station Tillamook Bay were called in to help search for the father and son. At around 3:20pm the Coast Guard found the father and transferred him to rescuers on shore. Rescuers attempted to revive the father but were unsuccessful.
As of 6 pm the Coast Guard was still searching for the 17 year old.
