The Neah-Kah-Nie Pirates continue to see success on the baseball diamond. They hosted the Vernonia Loggers in what was supposed to be a league play double header on Friday. Due to the length of game one, the second game was not completed.
The game started with a slight drizzle and cold temperatures, but that would soon clear. The Loggers came out in the first inning with the bats swinging. They slugged in 2 runs in the first inning. The Pirates answered, scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the first.
The second inning saw more runs scored, with the Loggers putting 2 unanswered runs on the scoreboard.
The third inning would prove to be a difficult one for the Pirates defense. The inning started with a runner getting on base due to an error by third basemen Josh Elinsky. The next two batters would get on base by a walk and hit by pitch. Neah-Kah-Nie Pitcher Keygan Wagner managed to get the Loggers to swing and pop up, getting 2 consecutive pop up outs. This is where the bases loaded became a problem for the Pirates. Two singles by Logger batters brought in 3 runs before the final out was made. This brought the game to a tie ballgame, 7-7, going into the bottom of the third.
Keygan Wagner came to bat first in the bottom of the third, hoping to make up some runs lost in the top of the inning. He got on base with a no out single. Josh Longfellow was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Josh Elinsky came to bat and hammered a 2 run triple to center field. Three more runs would be scored, extending the lead 11 to 7. This proved to be the nail in the coffin.
The Pirates would score runs in every following inning, while only allowing 2 more runs from the Loggers. Keygan Wagner was credited with the win for the Pirates.
The Pirates go 5-0 for the season, 2-0 in league play. They will host Sheridan on Monday at 430pm
