KNAPPA, OR - In a wet and muddy 2A match up, the Neah-Kah-Nie Pirates came out on top, beating league heavy weight Knappa Loggers.
The Pirates were able to take advantage of mistakes made by the Loggers, both on offense and defense. Neah-Kah-Nie was able to put points on the board early in the first quarter, scoring a touch down and two point conversion. The Loggers were able to respond with a touch down but failed to make the conversion, leaving the Pirates ahead 8-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw both teams fighting to take control of the game, each scoring again, sitting in a 14-14 tie. But it was the Pirates who were able to take command of the game, putting unanswered points on the board. A half ending touchdown showcased their dominance, bringing the score to 30-14.
The Pirates scored the lone set of points in the second half, scoring a touch down in their first possession in the third quarter. With the two point conversion, they increased their lead to 38-14. Neah Kah Nie' s defense silenced the Loggers offense for the remainder of the game, winning the game 38-14.
The Pirates are now 5-1 overall, but more importantly 4-0 in league play, while Knappa is 5-1 overall, but are 2-1 in league play.
The Pirates win over the Loggers has playoff implications. Knappa has been a perennial playoff participant. They have also frequented the top of the league table and have been often highly ranked. Friday's win puts the Pirates ahead of Knappa not only on the league table, but in 2A State Rankings. The Pirates went into the game ranked 5th, Knappa 3rd. The win moved the Pirates to 3rd in the 2A Classification.
With two games left in the season, last night's win potentially secures the Pirates their second playoff birth in a row and first league championship in years.
Neah-Kah-Nie's next game is at home on Friday the 12th of October against Warrenton. The game kicks off at 7pm. This will be the Pirates Homecoming and Senior Night.
